Housing co-operatives provide not-for-profit housing for their members. The members buy an equity share to live in the co-op but do not own equity in their housing. Members pay rent while they live in the co-op. If a co-op member moves, their unit is returned to the co-op to be offered to another individual. The departing member receives their equity share back with no interest; there is no profit for the member.
Co-ops charge their members only enough to cover costs, repairs, and reserves; they can offer housing that is much more affordable than average private sector rental costs. Co-op housing offers safety and security. Co-ops are controlled by their members who have a vote in decisions about their housing and there is no outside landlord. Each housing co-operative is a legal association, incorporated as a co-operative.

Located in Dugald, Manitoba, (30 minutes from downtown Winnipeg and 5 minutes from Oakbank), Dugald Estates is a 47-unit, three-storey, seniors housing co-op, on 4 acres of land which has been donated by the RM of Springfield. Residents will choose from spacious condo-style apartments in a secure building with underground parking.
Prospective residents must purchase shares at a cost of $89,610. All residents, regardless of suite size, will pay the same entry amount. This amount will be refunded when the resident leaves the co-op. Residents will receive no interest payments on these shares as we are a non-profit housing co-op. Any funds the co-op earns above and beyond its operating costs will be reinvested in the co-op. The $89,610 share cost is in line with the size and scope of the building we have designed, the quality and size of the suites, and the costs associated with the construction of an underground parking garage.
